Learn About the Benefits of Early Detection and Risk Assessment

Did You Know?

Cancer Could Be in Your Genes

About 1 in 10 cancers is hereditary, passed down from family members to family member. Family history of cancer can mean you're at a high risk of developing cancer.

Cancer is On the Rise in Younger Adults

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer rates are rising in younger adults. Environmental and lifestyle risk factors can affect your cancer risk.

Early Detection Saves Lives

Finding cancer at an early stage is easier to cure, yet about 50% of cancers are still detected at an advanced stage. For example, lung cancer screening can decrease lung cancer deaths by up to 39%, but only 6% of eligible people get screened.

Frequently Asked Questions about Risk Assessment, Genetic Testing, and Appointments

Cost should never be a barrier to testing. Most insurance plans cover genetic testing when indicated. Pre-authorization may be needed for some managed care programs. If an individual’s insurance does not cover the testing, the Hennessy Institute team will discuss resources available to help offset the costs of testing.

The risk assessment is a free online tool that can be accessed by anyone, anywhere. If additional consultation is required, appointments can be in person at the Hennessy Institute at Totowa, NJ., or done virtually. Further testing or screenings can be scheduled at Hackensack Meridian Health locations. (Services will expand to Hennessy Institute headquarters in a new ambulatory facility in Clifton, New Jersey near Hackensack Meridian’s School of Medicine and Center for Discovery and Innovation in early 2025.)
